My Radio
Before I became a Broadcast Communication student, I didn’t mind radio that much for I was a cartoon fanatic and a bookworm at the same time who’s always at the corner of my room with my nose on a book, but suddenly everything changed since our TV collapsed from working for us. Wherever my mom would wake up, she would plug the radio and turned it on, and I would wake up irritated with all the applause and laughter I heard from the background. The voices of the DJs or the announcer annoyed me so I would insist my mom to turn it off, but since she’s my mom she always won that’s why I had to live with it and everyday it felt like hell, but all of a sudden I got used to it. I started to appreciate it, and it was like miracle. Every day I would turn it on and tuned in to my favorite FM radio channel. My mom was confused why all of a sudden I changed and then during my senior year in high school, I was so clueless about what course I would choose in college, so I just clicked on whatever course that sounded so good and I didn’t know that I’d end up being a broadcast communication student, it was like fate that brought me in this course since I didn’t like radio before.
Just like me before, teens and some adults too, didn’t appreciate radio anymore, especially AM radios for it was dull and boring, only few people still listen to it. Teenagers usually like FM radios more than AM radios because it was more entertaining and it answered to their demands, such as updates about the newest music, or about their favorite performer, that AM radio could not give, because it wasn’t their concern. AM radios usually talked about significant things that happened in our country and to inform the people, so that we’ll have knowledge, and that was what radios were dealing because teenagers didn’t like that.
Another thing was the invention of hi tech gadgets affected the radio industry. If people wanted to know what was happening to our country today, they could just search the net and look for it, because it was easier and hassle free, plus they could have updates from their phones and that’s why the industry of radio was declining. I just wonder if there were still manufacturing companies that still made radios, probably there still are, but they were only few since it was not in demand nowadays. Some phone might have radio, but only FM radios.
Now I was speaking as a teenager who listened to radio and who sounded like a sales representative in the mall trying to persuade people to but my product and not just a brat and rebel teenager who didn’t know what a radio is. Radio was probably one of the best things that had ever invented aside from Televisions, Telephones and Computers and I didn’t agree that radio was for old fashioned people, but it was for everyone whether you were rich or not, either if you were still young or a senior citizen already. Some people didn’t appreciate it because IPad, IPod, and android phones were way cooler than having a radio. Imagine you were riding an FX and the people beside you had their earphones in their ears listening to cool music while you were listening to an FM radio then when you maximize its volume that even when you were wearing an earphone it could still be heard, for sure that they would find it ridiculous, because who still listened to it, only cheap people. That would be their initial reaction which was so stereotype. Because of that factor people who used to listen to radios, now listened to downloaded music so that they would be “in the crowd” and that’s the problem with us.
We want to be “in the crowd” though it was a cliché already and because we didn’t want to be laugh at, but some people didn’t know that radio had been popular too like those hi tech gadgets we had nowadays. It became a status symbol during the earlier years that radio was still in its peak of popularity. You were considered rich if you owned one, but nowadays if you told your friend that you had a radio at home, your friend might just laugh at you, but had they realize that radio was considered as a need not just a want, unlike any gadgets and appliances that could tell our status in this society.
As far as I want to believe radio was more updated than any gadget we own. AM radios gave reports that were fresh and live unlike in TV, the shows were recorded, plus radio was more reliable and more convenient especially during calamities. If you had a radio you were probably one of the luckiest people because even if you were floating in the flood, you could still hold unto it, because it was easy to carry than our Laptops and TVs, but what was dejecting was that people choose their expensive gadgets, who want to leave their expensive gadgets which were worth than half a million in the flood anyway, only fools did than their radios which could help them in a way. If only they could realize what radio could give , but you know in the end everyone would still turn to it when everything they had, had been washed away by some drastic thing that could happen, so I just suggest that even we had those luxurious gadgets at home, we should still keep a radio in our homes.
